Digital Signatures in Israel: What's Legal and What's Not

In short: In Israel, digital signatures are legally valid for most everyday agreements - leases, employment contracts, quotes, NDAs. Real estate transactions and wills still require physical signatures. The signing tool - mouse, finger, image - doesn't matter.

Israel's Electronic Signature Law

The Electronic Signature Law (2001) governs the validity of digital signatures in Israel. The law defines two levels:

Regular Electronic Signature

Any digital mark representing the signer's identity and intent to sign - including:

Legal validity is built from three layers:

1. Clear Intent

The signer signed because they agreed - not by mistake, not under duress. A signature on a clear document, sent in a reasonable way, provides intent.

2. Identification

The signature can be linked to a specific person. An email that sent the document, clear date and time, and content the other party received and acted on - all constitute identification.

3. Document Integrity

How to Sign a Contract PDF Correctly

Step 1: Fill in Details

Before signing, complete all contract fields:

• Full name, ID number
• Address, phone number
• Agreement start date

Step 2: Choose a Signature Style

Three options in the tool:

"The other party is asking for a physical signature"

Check whether the requirement stems from the document type (will, real estate) or habit. For most lease and employment contracts - explain that a digital signature is legally valid. If the other party still refuses - print, sign, scan.

"I need to sign a contract I received as a Word file"

"I sent a signed contract and found a mistake"

Password Protection After Signing

For contracts with sensitive information, password-protect the file after signing before sending. Send the password via a separate channel (SMS).

Verifying No Changes Were Made

The simple way - through the browser:

1. Open the file in Safari or Chrome on your phone

Signing on Android

The simple way - through the browser:

1. Open the file in Chrome
2. Go to the signature tool
3. Upload the file (downloads first to Downloads → browser opens it)

5. Drag, add the date

The alternative - Google Drive:

If the file is in Drive:

1. Open in Google Drive
2. Tap three dots → "Open with" → Browser
3. Go to the signature tool
4. Upload the file

Note for Android: There's no built-in signature capability like iOS. All signatures are done through a browser or third-party app. The browser is the easiest solution.

Tips for Quality Mobile Signatures

1. Finger or stylus pen?

• Finger - fast but signature is less precise
• Stylus pen (Apple Pencil, S Pen) - signature identical to handwritten
• Finger is enough for most documents. Stylus for major contracts

2. Landscape or portrait? Hold the phone landscape while signing. Gives more space, signature looks more professional.

3. Zoom in before signing Zoom into the signature area before drawing. A small signature on a small screen looks distorted in the final file.

4. Transparent background - not on mobile signatures Unlike a scanned signature, a mobile-drawn signature always sits on a white background. To integrate it well in the contract, position it over a white area in the contract (not over text).

5. Verify after saving Open the file after saving before sending. Mobile sometimes has display issues - signature in the wrong place, wrong size. Always verify before sending to the other party.

Common Mobile Issue: File Doesn't Save Where Expected

Common on phones: you sign, download, but the file doesn't appear in the expected location. Reasons:

iOS:

• The download went to "Files" → "iCloud Drive" → "Downloads"
• Check also "My Photos" (some apps save PDFs there by mistake)

Android:

• The download went to device "Downloads"
• Some phones save under /storage/emulated/0/Download/
• If you don't see it - use "File Manager" on the phone, search by file name

Tip: Before signing - give the file a clear name. "lease-2026.pdf" is easier to find than "document.pdf".

Signing on Mobile with WhatsApp Directly

Common scenario: you received a contract on WhatsApp, want to sign immediately without switching to email.

iPhone:

1. In WhatsApp - long-press the file
2. "Share" → choose "Files" app
3. File is saved
4. Open it, sign with the built-in pen
5. Send back via WhatsApp

Android:

1. In WhatsApp - the file auto-saves to /WhatsApp/Documents/
2. Open in Chrome → go to signature tool
3. Upload the file
4. Sign and download
5. In WhatsApp - tap "Attach" → choose the new file
