CONTEXT

Why Use Automatic Nikud?

Manually vocalizing a long document can take hours — automatic nikud does most of the work in minutes. This is useful for textbooks that need nikud for students, prayer books printed without vowels, children's booklets, learning materials for converts, and old rabbinic texts that were scanned.

Teachers, editors, publishers, and rabbis preparing teaching materials can all save significant time with this tool. Automatic nikud provides an excellent starting point that can be manually refined wherever needed.

HOW IT WORKS

How Does Automatic Nikud Work?

The tool uploads the PDF to the server, extracts Hebrew text from each page, and sends it to the Dicta engine — a BERT model trained on millions of vocalized Hebrew words. The engine analyzes each word in context and assigns the most appropriate nikud.

After vocalization, the tool builds a new PDF with the nikud-bearing text embedded in a direct font — the document is saved with the nikud visible for reading. A Word (.docx) file is also generated for easy editing.

Words the engine is uncertain about are flagged for review. Clicking them in the preview opens a manual correction panel with alternatives — letting you refine the nikud before downloading.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How do I add nikud to a PDF?

Upload the PDF file, choose text type (modern, rabbinic, biblical, or poetry), and click "Add Nikud". The system automatically vocalizes all text in the file and creates a new PDF with nikud. Words the system is uncertain about are highlighted in red and can be corrected manually before final download.

What is automatic nikud?

Automatic nikud is a process where an AI system adds vowel marks (patah, kamatz, hiriq, etc.) to unvocalized Hebrew text. This enables precise reading, prevents reading ambiguity (for example - "ספר" can be book, counted, or barber), and is especially important for learning materials, religious students, and people for whom Hebrew is not a first language.

Which nikud engine is used?

We use the "Dicta" engine - an AI-based nikud engine developed by the Israeli Center for Text Analysis. It is one of the best engines in the world for Hebrew - used by universities, research institutes, and educational institutions in Israel.

What is the accuracy level?

The Dicta engine achieves 95-97% accuracy on modern Hebrew text. Accuracy is slightly lower for literary and rabbinic texts (90-95%) due to linguistic complexity. Words the system is uncertain about are highlighted in red and allow manual correction - which raises final accuracy to 99%+ after review.

What is the difference between "text types"?

Modern - for contemporary Hebrew prose (books, articles, documents). Rabbinic - for halacha, midrash, Talmud, and rabbinic writings. Biblical - for biblical and Mishnaic language. Poetry - for Hebrew poetry. Each mode calibrates the system to the specific linguistic style - correct choice significantly improves accuracy.

Does the tool work on scanned PDFs?

Not directly. Nikud works on digital text already existing within the PDF. If the file is a scan of paper (an image), first use the "Make PDF Searchable" tool that recognizes text in the scan and creates a PDF with real text - then you can move that file to the nikud tool.

What happens to incorrectly vocalized words?

Words the system is uncertain about are highlighted in red in the preview. Clicking them opens a manual correction panel with alternative options the system suggests. After agreeing on the correct nikud, the final file downloads with the corrections. Especially useful for professional texts requiring full accuracy.

What happens to the file after nikud?

The file is automatically deleted from servers after you download the vocalized file. We do not view, store, or share content with any third party.
